In the middle
The start of the year is New Years
The End is Christmas
The start of a story pulls you in
And the end spits you out.
The tip of Mount Everest is legend
And the bottom of the ocean is still yet to be explored
The start of a gentle ocean wave
Ends on the soft ocean shore
We cheer on the ones
With the highest school ranking
And whisper about
the ones at the bottom
We celebrate new lives
And little laughs
And wipe our tears for
Ones that have ended
What about the middle of the Year
Does it have a name?
And does anyone even remember
the middle page of a story.
The forgotten people who lay still
In the middle of Mount Everest
And the tanks that have grown green
On the way to the ocean floor
Do we even remember
The ones in the middle of the ranks
Not the best
Nor the worst
Or the people who are
In the midst of their lives
Who are struggling
To find their worth
But the middle of an oreo
Contains the cream
In the middle of life
We learn to dream
Neither the ugliest or the prettiest
Or the dumbest or the smartest
Or the ones who don't own a single trophy
The ones who can't speak to a crowd
The ones that whisper poems in their sleep
But are too afraid to say them out loud
The ones who wear those invisible crowns
Of ordinary wildflowers
Adorned by an ordinary gown
The extraordinary of the ordinary
The ones who are their own special riddle
The ones whose homes are in the middle
