How To Get A Guinea Pig

Hi.

I went on a field trip two days ago. There was a cage of Guinea pigs. And I fell in love with them. But for some reason, they didn't like me much. Well, it doesn't matter. I'm gonna get my own. I don't know how yet. But I'm gonna get one. Two years ago, I fell in love with Hamsters. I watched around a hundred videos on them. But then I found out they were nocturnal, and the problem was, even if I wanted to be, I wasn't.

So that means it would be sleeping even if I wanted to play with it.

So, Guinea pigs are the next best thing. I made a list to get myself one.

Mission Guinea Pig

1. Persuade Father to get a Guinea Pig

2. Get enough money to get Guinea Pig Toys.

3. Find a space for Guinea Pig

4. Research on Guinea Pigs

5. Create a list of names for future Guinea Pig.

My father does not have a soft spot for small, adorable balls of fur. He didn't even have a soft spot for Milo. Well, maybe he had. A teeny tiny one. So I need to make my father want to have a pet. A.K.A Guinea pigs.

What better to do than a poem?

Guinea Pigs

Father dear, I ask one thing.

A tiny peep, a Guinea Pig.

With tiny paws and whiskers, neat.

A guinea pig would be oh, so neat.

Father dear, it won't be brute.

You have to agree, guinea pigs are cute.

I'll keep it in a well-kept cage.

A guinea pig will make my day.

Tiny, little balls of fur,

Cuter than any other.

All I ask, Father Dear,

Is a guinea pig, so sincere.

Right, now that's taken care of.

1. Persuade Father to get a Guinea Pig

No. 1, checked. Guinea pigs can be expensive. But what can be more expensive is Guinea Pig toys. And loads of other guinea pig things. After a quick Google search, this is what I have gathered.

Initial Costs:
  • Guinea Pig: $40-$100 (can be lower if adopted)
  • Cage: $50-$100
  • Bedding: $15-$20
  • Food (hay, pellets, treats): $10-$20 initially
  • Hide and other accessories: $10-$20
Ongoing Costs:
  • Food: Continued need for fresh vegetables, hay, and pellets (a significant expense)
  • Vitamin C Supplements: Guinea pigs need a daily source of vitamin C, so supplements like Tangerine Dream treats are essential.
  • Bedding: Regular replacement of bedding (paper towels and fleece) is necessary.
  • Veterinary Care: While some vets specialize in guinea pigs, they can be expensive.
  • Cleaning Supplies: Regular cage cleaning and supplies are required.
Factors Affecting Cost:
  • Number of Guinea Pigs: The more guinea pigs you have, the more food and bedding you'll need.
  • Dietary Choices: The type and quantity of fresh vegetables and treats you provide will impact costs.
  • Veterinary Needs: Guinea pigs can be prone to certain health issues, leading to vet bills.

Initial costs lead to around 200 dollars. Which in rupees is a whopping 17000. For the initial thingies like hay and the piggy itself. Right now, I have around two hundred rupees in my piggy bank. Hoping I might get some birthday money will be quite useless 'cause I rarely get birthday money. And my birthday is in August. I think I have around five hundred rupees somewhere, which my grandmother gave me two years ago for my dance performance. (My sister could have spent it. Who knows?)

Did you know the oldest guinea pig on record's name is Snowball? Lived for a total of 14 years and 10 months.

I could borrow money, but from who? I could ask my uncle, or my grandma, or my other grandma. Or my grandpa. But the chances they'll gimme anything above a hundred, circles around 30 per cent. Which is not good.

Because of my procrastination problems and my very bad math skills, let's keep this step for last.

2. Get enough money to get Guinea Pig Toys.

Still there. I need to get a finance advisor.

I need a spot to put my guinea pig cage. It depends on factors like-

How fast can I access the spot?

Not too high in case the guinea pig gets a little over-excited.

In a space where my Mamama won't find it a sore thumb.

Where our robot vacuum (which we call Robo) won't hit it repeatedly (which it sometimes does) when it cleans the house.

And stuff like the cage size and place for the water filter. According to Google Auntie, a guinea pig cage for one should at least be 0.7 square metres. Which is kinda larger than I anticipated. According to Bing, that's about the size of a small yoga mat. And, I'll have to find space for that. I feel like there'll be enough in the master bedroom, but as I told you, my father doesn't have a soft spot for furry animals. The balcony has space, but our neighbourhood is a haven for cats. And cats, unfortunately, eat rodents.

Did you know, Guinea pigs' favourite colour is green

Our study room is like a space above the stairs, which I like to refer to as a third floor, but is barely big enough to be one. I think there might be enough space for the guinea pig, but then there won't be anymore space for us to actually study. But for a guinea pig, I'm willing to sacrifice.

There is also a space in our upper living room, but there lies our dusty old keyboard. Which I don't really use anymore unless there is a party for my friends who can play. But I'll find another space to keep that. I just realised there is a small space on top of our bookshelf, which we can reach (because the top of our bookshelf is right next to our study room), which will be the perfect place for a guinea pig. I think it will be big enough, though I'm not sure if it will be.

So we got two candidates for where the heck we should put the guinea pig.

3. Find a space for Guinea Pig

I have no idea why the strike-through is not red. At least that's another thing on the list cut off.

As for the next thing on my list - I found the perfect website. On Google, of course.

Did you know Guinea Pigs have more toes in the front than in the back?

Called Kavee, filled with tons of stock of  Guinea pig knowledge. Wow, this was much easier than I thought it would. Check it out if you want to see how cool Guinea pigs are. But as a responsible researcher, I need to have back ups. Like more Guinea pig website havens.

I'll make a list. I love lists.

  1. Kavee
  2. GuineaDad
  3. Cali Cavy Collective
  4. Andy by Anderson Hay
That's all I got for now. If you've got any better ones, feel free to share. So finally, Guinea Pig research is done with! That was so quick.

4. Research on Guinea Pigs

Yay! The strike-through is red. And another thing off our list.

The last one has gotta be my favourite.

I have got about One Thousand Six hundred and Fifty-Eight names bubbling in my head right now. And like I said before, I love lists. And feel free to choose a name from the list below if you wanna name a pet (or anything really).

  1. Snow White
  2. Jelly Bean
  3. Princess Piggella (Piggy for short)
  4. Lord Guinea the 176th (Ginny for short)

Here you go. And another thing crossed off.

5. Create a list of names for future Guinea Pig.

If you don't count the fact that I practically skipped the second step, I'm set to be a Guinea Pig mama. And while you're still here, let's land another Guinea Pig fact.

Did you know Teddy Roosevelt had five Guinea Pigs at the white house!

 Anyway, see ya'
